T
his new pizzeria, opening in the same building as the really quite excellent newish Everyman Cinema, is a take on a classic Neapolitan joint, from the team behind admired music-bar Spiritland.
You can work your way through a short crowd-pleasing menu of authentic pizza, made using a 72-hour dough ferment (meaning a lighter, fluffier and easier-to-digest crust), alongside antipasti, gelato and dolci.
Offering informal all-day dining accommodating 130 covers, from a drink with a slice for £5 at lunchtime, to dinner or take away, we reckon Happy Face will be a welcome answer to the pricier options around Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard.
Best of all, downstairs is retro-inspired late-night subterranean vermouth and cocktail haven and club Supermax, “a celebration of Italian discotheques” (doesn’t that sound ace?).

It will nod to the “excesses and glamour of the 1970s” through the use of statement features, from velvet wall hangings and cosmic oil projector wheels to a Marmoreal terrazzo bar and custom-made disco ball. A fully-loaded Spiritland-curated jukebox will be an homage to the era, hopping from slow tempo funk to forgotten Europop to carry on late into the night.
By which time you’ll be racing back upstairs for more pizza, we imagine.
