MUST DO: Art fair, Kew the Music, Mela

From an arty market to Bangladeshi festival, three ideas for the lazy days of July

ART: Summer Illustrators’ Fair

This market takes over the giant canopied yard next door to the House of Illustration gallery. A hundred contemporary illustrators and collectives will be selling a wide range of work from emerging and established artists, including limited edition prints, posters, handmade books, jewellery, bags, ceramics and homeware. Free, Sun 9th July, West Handyside Canopy N1C

MUSIC: Kew the Music

It’s more bucolic than many cityfests. Photo: PR
Did you know the famous botanic gardens have been hosting outdoor concerts for 34 years? This year’s Kew the Music (just over half an hour on the Overground from Cally Road, lest we forget) is a week-long festie of summer picnic concerts set within the enviably colourful grounds. Musically it’s not too challenging: the line-up includes All Saints (with Melanie C and Sophie Ellis-Bextor), Haçienda Classiçal, Mary J Blige and our favourites, iconic Mancunians James, who play on Sat 15th July. Tickets (11th–16th July) available here.

FESTIVAL: Mela

Last year’s celebration. Photo: PR.
An annual community bash, this highlights the influential Bangladeshi cultural presence in Bloomsbury, with funfair rides, arts and crafts workshops, face painting, henna painting and sports activities. Plus music, dance, fabulous Asian outfits, and spangly jewellery. Free, Sun 16th July, 12-6pm. 3 Guilford Street WC1N
