A bowl of pea soup being served at The Pea Place

Give peas a chance: Pea Place is coming to E1

This ultimate healthy pop-up celebrates the nation's tiniest vegetable

We’ve had avocado cafes, cereal cafes…and so it’s only natural that the diminutive pea’s time has finally come. For one day in July, Canvas Café, just off Brick Lane, will transform into what they’re cutely calling The Pea Place.

Which means what, exactly? Well, all things green and tiny: you’ll be able to scoff pea and aubergine curry, peas on toast, pea, mint and honey Ice Cream, and a scrumptious plate of pea, cucumber and apple. Oh peas!

And why exactly are our little green friends edging off the side dish and into the spotlight? Well, the science bit is that the UK is the largest producer and consumer of frozen peas, but really, who cares about that? It’s also – apparently – Great British Pea Week.

The plates will be cooked by no other than (the rather aptly-named) Rachel Green, TV chef and Yes Peas! ambassador, who wants to encourage more people to eat more of them, and to realise that “the Great British pea is a thing of beauty – versatile, delicious, healthy and easy to prepare.”

And look out for the – groan! – pea-dal power tricycle touring the capital on 11th July, ridden by an eye-catching human peapod, who will also be handing out information and inspiration about, you guessed it…

The Pea Place will be at the Canvas Café, 42 Hanbury St, London, E1 5JL on Thursday 12th July from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free, and on a first come, first served basis. For more information head here
