Tenner or Less: LeyLey’s N7

What's our verdict on Lower Holloway's latest foodie off-the-beaten-track opening?

Where: Tucked off never-ending Holloway Road, close to the tube station by the same name and just round the corner from pizza hotspot Zia Lucia.

What: A casual, order-at-the-counter burger joint, housed in an industrial space where skateboards adorn the walls and you can play darts whilst you wait for your grub. It’s the brainchild of William Leighton, who came up with his dream concept after living on the west coast of the US, falling in love with its “simplistic and fresh tastes”. Back here in the UK, first came a pop-up at The Gunmakers in Marylebone, now a six-month residency in north London.

Why: You can’t beat a good burger can you? Choose from dry-aged beef, buttermilk chicken or sweet potato hash; they also offer a selection of wings (Frank’s hot and lemon pepper) and a couple of salads for the more health-conscious (fennel and citrus sounds fresh and appetising). I can’t resist their £7 signature: the perfectly pink patty is full of flavour (though a tad on the thin side), and comes encased in a lightly toasted bun, with tomato, onion, shredded lettuce and secret sauce. A generous portion of crisp and well-seasoned fries brings the bill in at £9. Come in on the nose by adding treacle-and-beer smoked bacon.

Notes: Keep their super reasonable lunch deal in mind – £6.50 for a burger or salad plus fries (Monday-Friday, 12-2pm); that’ll even leave enough change for half a pint of Hammerton. If you fancy something for afters and don’t mind stretching the budget, they make doughnuts to order – there’s an intriguing-sounding chicken skin sugar option on the menu.
