ART: Jasper Johns at the Royal Academy

The autumn is always a brilliant time for art in the capital. And ending in December at the Royal Academy is another of our top shows of 2017. An artist widely known for his iconic, densely textured collages and paintings of flags, targets, numbers, maps and light bulbs, Jasper Johns has occupied a central position in American art since his first solo exhibition in New York in 1958.

Something Resembling Truth is the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s work to be held in the UK in 40 years, comprising over 150 works. Famous and recognisable pieces aside, we especially liked his late-period sequence, Regrets (2013). Until 10th December, Royal Academy W1, tickets here.

MUSIC: London Jazz festival is back in KX

If you like this most freeform of musical styles, then head to the canalside arts venue King’s Place pretty damn quick. It’s a key player in the 10-day, 50-venue annual bash, which has earnt a justifiable rep for its programme of concerts, commissions, club events and talks. Expect everyone from the Keith Tippett Octet with fellow pianist Matthew Bourne (Fri 10th Nov) to The Andy Sheppard Quartet and Fred Hersch (18th Nov), described by Vanity Fair as ‘the most arrestingly innovative pianist in the last decade’. 10th-18th Nov, tickets here, 90 York Way N1

FOOD: Franco Manca spawns again

They’re hardly the small, family-run Brixton wood-fired sourdough pizzeria who’d command queues around the block these days (partly because they’re more ubiquitous than Pizza Express) but this latest opening is a good budget option if you’re lost in KX on a budget and need food fast and cheaply. Pizzas still hover way below a tenner (starting at £4.95), beers are ‘no label’ and come in under £4, with house wine £15.50. Not bad for the area, anyway. 62-68 York Way N1
