MUST DO: the ‘ultimate’ gin & tonic bar

For a damn good G 'n' T in a uniquely urban location this summer, it's a pop-up worth the detour

So this is quite fun. As if you need (yet) another reason to hang out at the St Pancras Renaissance hotel – that is, besides its still-glam bars, public spaces and restaurants – there’s currently a pop-up gin bar parked right outside on the concourse.

A slinky Airstream caravan being operated by Fever-Tree tonics for the duration of the summer, you simply rock up and take a seat on one of the various cute tables dotted about its adjoining astroturfed terrace.

Better still, the set-up offers a unique perspective of London’s neo-gothic masterpiece, pleasingly set back from the noise and grit of the Euston Road. It catches the evening light, too.

From around twenty gins (including Seedlip, the cleverpants non-alcoholic one) we eschewed the likes of Tanqueray 10 or Bathtub and stayed local, ordering the Half Hitch, the newish distillery based just up the canal in Camden Lock. We paired it with a couple of different tonics: the elderflower variety added a very delicate floral edge, although we actually preferred the stronger citrus notes of the classic.

All in all then, if you’re slogging it down to one of the big terminals this month for your holidays, this shiny Airstream is well worth a little diversion. Hic.

The Fever Tree pop-up bar is on until 26th August, and opens Tuesday-Saturday (17.00 until 22:00) at the grand entrance of the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel.
