Beefeater is opening in King’s Cross as Bar + Block

The steakhouse chain is trying its hand at a hipper reinvention in King's Cross

This is next level: a very corporate new opening masquerading as something, um, edgy. You can almost hear the squeak of the shoes in the marketing meeting.

York Way arrival Bar + Block is perhaps best described as a Beefeater with a beard (or even a twirly ‘tash). Its sister branch in Birmingham is actually named Beefeater Bar + Block, and its owners, Whitbread, run giants like Premier Inn and Costa. But they’ve dropped any associations with the infamous steak chain for the shiny King’s Cross opening.

Don't reckon the 'Beefeater' will be used in London, eh? Photo: Tripadvisor

The interior? You guessed it: bare bricks, counter seating and big, industrial pendants. And a quick look at the menu sees a big play about using British breed cattle, “grazed on the stunning planes of the Pampas in South America”, with 28-day aged steaks. There’s also pork belly, flattened chicken and a typically expansive brunch menu.

We’ll reserve judgement see how it compares to other local haunts. But from Vinoteca to Caravan, there’s some mighty tough foodie competition round these parts, isn’t there?
