MUST DO: Get punked up in King’s Cross

An exhibition and all-day festival as the area celebrates 40 years of a music and style revolution

Events to mark the 40th anniversary of punk continue to make some noise in the capital as, hot on the heels of this pop-up shop at the British Library, two more attractions arrive in King’s Cross.

Currently running on Stable Street is From King’s Road to King’s Cross, an exhibition celebrating the fashion that defined the look of punk. You’ll see pieces from the iconic Seditinaries collection by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, lots more safety pin, tartan and royalty-mocking clobber from the era, and the chance to peep through the walls to watch classic punk movies too.

Then on Saturday, PunKX arrives in the area for a one-day festival. Original anarchic-types may baulk at the idea of punk-inspired makeovers with free mohawk wigs for kids, or Guitar Hero punkaraoke, but it is sure to be a gentle day out for everyone else.

Slightly confusingly (if you ask us), but sure to be spectacular, are the regular performances and parades being put on by Glastonbury’s creative kings, Mutoid Waste Company. They will celebrate the area’s more recent musical heritage, in a rather tenuously linked nod to the 90s nightclub culture.

But any excuse to bring down some DJs, plus giant fire-breathing robot spiders, scrap military aircraft or whatever the Mutoids have in store this time, is alright by us.

The exhibition is free and runs until June 11th at 9 – 10 Stable Street. N1C
The PunKX festival is on Sat 4th June from 11am – 10.30pm, in and around Granary Square
